Gerlach design study at DKT2018

On this year’s DKT in Nuremberg we present a design study that is the result of investigations regarding optimization approaches for our machines.

Q: Which criteria did you consider for this design study?

A: We introduced several aspects in the concept of our study.
The main premise always was to deal modestly with resources. The functional aspect results from our research activities in the field of thermodynamics together with the university of Paderborn. Part of this concept is the idea of a modified cavity for the active influence of the heat transmission into the product. By improving the process airflow, less hot air can be used for crosslinking the product. As a result the amount of gas as our main energy source can  be diminished.

Q: Are other areas of interest regarding the careful use of the resources and beyond?

A: Yes, the modest use of basic materials was a task as well for the design of the machine. Moreover, beside this topic the reduction of production time was another issue. The Gerlach machines are MADE IN GERMANY at 100 %. Regarding the investments costs for our customers the manufacturing costs play a prominent role.

With the modified design and our investment in new machinery we will be able to automate production steps and keep the unit costs stable. By integrated cable ducts add-on parts could be omitted.

Q: The implementation of the collected concept ideas would for sure bring some positive changes for Gerlach. Who participated in this study?

A: In fact, the design study is not the result of the isolated work of a few people –  the study is the result of our team performance. We are particularly glad about the fact that the major part of the ideas came from our junior staff members. The involvement of our junior engineers and our apprentices in combination with experienced employees from the construction and development department as well as the scientific members of the cooperating universities made a successful concept.

Q: Are there concrete plans for the realization of this concept?

A: The further practical tests will show, whether this study can be made a sustainable machine generation.

We will be pleased to explain more details on the exhibition in Nuremberg or at a later date in a face-to-face conversation.
